Moving to the country’s south you will visit archaeological and architectural monuments dating back to the V-VI centuries. This tour will not only introduce you to the Georgian culture, but also open the country’s mysterious pages, known almost to nobody.

STOP 1 : BOLNISI SIONI CHURCH

“ Bolnisi Sioni or Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is a Georgian Orthodox basilica in the Bolnisi village of Bolnisi District, Georgia. The cathedral was built in 478–493. It is the oldest extant church building in Georgia. Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is known for its Georgian Bolnisi inscriptions. These are one of the oldest historical documents of the Georgian alphabet.”

STOP 2 : DINNER IN BOLNISI

STOP 3 : KVESHI FORTRESS

“Kveshi Tsikhe is thought to originate from 7th-8th centuries. It was built on a hill, initially to control the roads of Samshvilde-Tashiri and Zurtak-Javakheti. It is a very interesting spot for tourists interested in military history and architecture  of Georgia and Armenia.”

STOP 4 : DMANISI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

“Dmanisi is the site of a medieval village located about 85 km (53 miles) southwest of Tbilisi on a promontory at the confluence of the Mashavera and Phinezauri rivers. Archaeological exploration of the ruins began in the 1930s, but systematic excavations were not undertaken until the 1980s. Shortly thereafter it became apparent that pits or cellars dating from medieval times had been dug into deposits containing prehistoric animal bones. In addition to the jawbone found in 1991, two skulls were recovered in 1999 exhibiting the relatively small brains, flat foreheads, and low cranial profiles characteristic of H. erectus. Indeed, the fossils are close in their morphology to similarly aged specimens from eastern Africa.

Dmanisi is thus one of the most ancient human habitation sites anywhere in Eurasia, approximately equivalent in age to the oldest H. erectus localities in eastern Africa, which makes the Dmanisi remains crucial in the study of human evolution.”
